Spotify for Alexa

When the Echo launched in 2014, it was notably missing one of the most popular music streaming services. In the fall of 2016, Spotify was launched across the Alexa platform.

My role

Design the customer experience for setting up and using your Spotify account with Alexa devices.

Results

Spotify launched on-time with incredibly positive customer feedback

Use of the music experience increased substantially, mapping directly to the launch of this feature

Customer feedback remained incredibly positive as we exposed the Preferred Music Service option

Specific Tasks

Produce wireframes for app account linking

Produce customer flows for voice interaction with a screenless device

Present regularly to Spotify and internal leadership

Respond quickly to partner requests in order to exceed the bar for internal and external requirements

Deliver final designs to engineering, working closely to ensure a top-notch customer experience

Process

I worked closely with product in order to define our internal requirements. I also met regularly with Spotify design and leadership in order to ensure alignment with these priorities and timelines.

Working with evolving requirement documentation, I produced wireframes, task flows, and prototypes for the account linking flow to occur within the Alexa app. The app structure was evolving and I had to ensure that we designed an experience that could evolve along with the app while maintaining a consistent Alexa voice and aligning with the Spotify brand standards.

As we moved from low-fidelity wireframes to high-fidelity mock-ups and user flows, I presented regularly to internal and external leadership. Working concurrently with engineering to ensure that we hit our go-to-market schedule.

As we were addressing the problem of getting customers' accounts set up and linked between the two services (Alexa and Spotify), I was also designing the aspects of the daily music experience that would be unique to Spotify. This service would be joining an existing suite of music experiences and I ensured that customers got to have elements of the Spotify experience that make it unique while maintaining consistency across the Alexa voice platform.

This included presenting screenless customer flows and gaining Spotify buy-in for a voice-first experience. As the first device in the Alexa family, the Echo was an extremely new mode for customer interaction.

Finally, I worked to design a Preferred Music Service setting that would allow Alexa to smartly target customers' preferred services. Ultimately, this reduced friction and allowed customers a quicker way to play music from the services they love.

I delivered all of the interaction designs to engineering and worked closely with them over the weeks prior to launch. As new requirements surfaced, I was able to deliver customer-focused solutions that helped meet the engineering budget while maintaining a top-notch customer experience.
